Overall Summary:

Jarvis Mann, P.I. is a gumshoe’s detective, heralding back to the golden age of PI novels where a good shot of whiskey, a juicy burger, or a hot dame could easily set things right, or so very, very wrong.  He’s on the case, and this one is a doozy.  His client, a breath-taking bombshell is being stalked- by a shadowy figure that no one’s been quite able to nail down yet.  The list of potential suspects grows by the minute, and Jarvis Mann is forced to navigate through a web of police, jealous lovers, ex-husbands, and his own feelings to get at the truth before it’s too late.

Overall Impressions

This was a fun read.  Jarvis Mann has a dry and funny wit that it at both disarming and engaging.  I found myself both smiling and shaking my head at his various mental antics, and glad to see that the writer Randy Weir did not fall into too many of the cliched “hard-boiled PI” characteristics and plot devices that sometimes runs rampant through books such as these.  The characters, even the minor ones were well thought out, and his descriptions of the setting made it easy to imagine myself riding along with him for the ride.

The plot overall was good, and the writing tight and fast-paced, although it was slightly disappointing how easy it was to figure out the truth of the mystery.  I won’t go into it here for obvious reasons, but I will say that a reader who is paying attention should be able to get a good hunch who the culprit is by the first third of the book, and then a clear “ah-ha!” moment about half-way through.

Overall, though, it was a fun read, and one that I would recommend for a lazy summer afternoon- preferably with a whiskey and soda and a cigarette in hand- just for atmosphere, of course.
