Darcie Finch has certainly seen better days. Betrayed and left penniless by those who she once loved and trusted, she is forced to take a position as a maid for the mysterious, and some would say dangerous Dr. Damien Cole. As her artistic talent allows her to work closer with the doctor and become closer to the man, strange occurrences and coincidences that can’t be ignored grow alongside their passion and longing. Who exactly is Dr. Cole? Who are the strange men visiting his home in the dark of night? And why does he frequent the streets of Whitechapel when the moon shines bright?
Eve Silver paints with words. There is no better way to say it. Her story, Dark Desires provides the reader with a rich and vibrant view of Victorian London during the time when Jack the Ripper stalked the streets of Whitechapel. The story is told through the eyes of Darcie Finch, a brave, world-weary, but still somehow innocent woman who is thrust into a dangerous and darkly gothic world that simmers with passion and life.
While I absolutely loved the author’s ability to bring me into her world, I felt the book was a bit unnecessarily slow at times. Her use of what I call the “slow smolder” technique was a bit heavy handed. She also telegraphed some of her more suspenseful moments instead of hinting at them gently. Overall, though, her characters were vibrant and believable, and the book was a fun read. Eve Silver is definitely an author to pay attention to.
