Book: Chance a Novel
Author: Carolyn M. Bowen
Publisher: Carolyn M. Bowen
Overall Rating : 3.5 out of 5 Stars
After a night of torrid love making, Sydney’s bodyguard turned lover left. He had been set up and accused of a former employee’s murder, and Sydney strongly suspected that his work with the CIA may have been the true catalyst for his leaving. Now it’s up to Sydney, a powerful Atlanta lawyer to try and do her best to find out what happened, all while dealing with a client involved with the Chinese Mafia.
Ms. Bowen’s writing style reminds me of putting together a 1000 piece puzzle. She starts by laying out the pieces in a soft and subtle manner. The reader starts out a little confused, and perhaps a little apprehensive, but as the puzzle pieces fall into place, the picture becomes both breath-taking and daunting.
The characters of Sydney and Walter have a dynamic feel to them, which is a welcome contrast to the overall slow burn of the plot and writing style.
That being said, the novel does have a fair amount of action in it, and those looking for surprises won’t be disappointed in the least.
The plot is intriguing with plenty of twists and turns, and the characters, both minor and major simply jump off the page, once you get into the novel.
My only real complaint, and this is an extremely personal one, is that the author tends to use more of a passive voice in her writing. I would have liked to see more dialog, especially in the first third of the book.
If you looking for a great weekend read for the holidays or the new year, this is a wonderful choice by a great mystery author.
